Fukushima radiation reaches Pacific Ocean bottom

3 05 2011

The ground samples taken from the bottom of the Pacific Ocean near the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant show that the level of radiation there exceeds the norm 100-1000 times, an official with Tokyo Electric Power company, the plant’s operator, said Tuesday.

The samples were taken at the depth from 20 to 30 meters, he said.

Experts say the high level of radiation at the bottom of the ocean can be caused by continuous leak of radioactive water from the plant’s damaged drainage system.

By now 87,500 tons of radioactive water remain in the lower sections of the reactors and its pumping is continuing.
