Dr. Robert Walker, Chairman of the Board of MEOPAR, has been deeply involved in the nuclear industry. He was simultaneously President and CEO of Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, until almost the exact day that Dr. Richard Wilcox called foul about the ties between Dr. Walker and the Fukushima radiation testing. Buesseler et. al. aren’t even doing science here anyway. I wonder if they even took methods in grad school. You can’t even start talking about statistics until you have at least 50 samples and in this case I think 1,000 to 2,000 samples. Also, probably would need to have various depths. That’s apart from whether they should even be testing seawater or if they are testing it correctly. Clearly they must additionally check sediment and plankton. I suspect they should be doing 50 plus per location. It’s an upside down world where Cullen and Buesseler get Ph.D.s. I’m glad your posts and nuke pro are highly visible on this. Mine are less visible than on most topics – not at all visible. On most topics I was on p. 11, 3 years ago, and on the first several pages more recently.

Yes, on stats. My dad was a research scientist in horticulture and he never asked “citizen scientists” to run around and do his work for him!
Every-time he gives that spiel he sounds more and more m like a carnival barker. And he wants samples of seawater with no algae or seaweed in it when that is what would accumulate the most toxins! That’s why contaminated people take pills with algae in them so they can get something inside that will absorb the radioactive contamination.
The whole effort seems like a P.R. stunt than science.

Yes, they are tops! For the longest I couldn’t get on them or even Dana’s site without crashing but now I can some. I found research on algae and seaweed from 1956. US research. He got 630,000$ and the machine cost $75,000. Even if there is a difference in US and CA $ I think there’s a lot of money missing!

Here is more detail, but we still end up in the same place (Board of Directors). And, of course we do as Canada is so resource dependent (including uranium and fisheries), and the same appears true of their universities.. “Applications are reviewed by the MEOPAR Research Management Committee (RMC),” […] “The RMC provides their list of successful proposals, with recommended funding amounts, to the MEOPAR Board of Directors”. http://meopar.ca/about-meopar/research-management-committee
Research Management Committee has 3 from Dalhousie, one from Centres of Excellence, one from Clearwater Seafoods, one from MEOPAR, one from shipbuilding co. There are a total of around 20. No time to research them. Canada is one big mining town anyway, though you can live there without knowing it, just like you can study in a University Dept. without knowing its dependence on mining if you don’t accidentally step on the wrong toes by doing the wrong research.
Too bad that no one will do real research so that we could have real facts. Dana’s the only one who has tried to do anything statistically significant, to my knowledge. He’s done the qualitative research and the quantitative. But, it would be nice if some of these government entities and universities rolling in the money would use it for testing a wide variety of things in statistically significant numbers, and modeling the future impacts of the ongoing TEPCO leaks. Better – let the governments return everyone’s tax monies so they could afford independent testing.

This is useful and well-done on the front-end. It talks about the importance of uranium to Canada. If Cullen-Buessler would have bothered to test more than a handful of water samples (or anything else) then people might be less skeptical. Their most criminal action is still frightening people away from potassium rich foods, like bananas, without which you drop dead. And, which help to protect against cesium. One of the most irksome things about Cullen is his arrogance thinking that he needs to give people science education, when he needs some. He needs some education in methods and stats. And, in nutrition.

I find this whole thing fishier and fishier. Cullen’s an expert on plankton. Did anyone see any research done by him on radionuclides in plankton? Is he too blinkered to realize that many radionuclides are metals – probably most. And, that heavy metal poisoning is an issue too. Or is he playing dumb? Wasn’t his diss on Cadmium, another heavy metal? Is the $630,000 minus $75,000 for his Areva machine to check Cs being used to test plankton? But, it’s not being admitted too? He was born in Peterborough home to GE-Hitachi Candu fuel plant. Does he have friends or relatives working there? . Also a tritium sign facility was there, I think. Not too far from Cameco’s Port Hope site. Maybe he should just stop complaining about our research because every rock turned over shows uranium mining and nuclear ties. Maybe spurious because it IS resource dependent Canada, but maybe not. Who pays calls the shots, generally. Where is serious water testing?Half a dozen samples given on his blog are NOT statistically significant.

Is Jay Cullen as smart as Dana gives him credit for? Or, is he a typical blinkered academic – narrow minded like a mule with blinders. Maybe a bit of both? Regardless, he’s a symptom of a deeper disease, like a carbuncle, and not worth everyone’s time. Really! But, everyone loves a good mystery and this is it.

So what if he has industry ties. Airline pilots are pro air travel, another risk-informed technology and are highly trained to operate flawed machines that crash and kill people. You dont bat an eye over that. Only about 40 people have known to have died from nuclear related efforts. You people hate nuclear technology and the millions of people directly or indirectly involved. Its bigger than you know. Frankly you people make me sick.

St. Louis alone has a huge epidemic of fatal cancers just from the Manattan Project dump sites.

Turd, because when they are covering not just a hazard to the Pacific Ocean and everyone who depends on it, but coverup the inept action or lack thereof, they are creating risks to millions, even hundreds of millions of people. And these are not people who are choosing their fate under a known risk, they /we are all guinea pigs.
Those who choose to fly, choose to fly, and the risk factors are pretty well known and in the open. You either crashed and died or you didn’t. Unlike radiation, in which I am still wondering….how much of that strontium I absorbed as a baby in 1963 has or will have a terrible effect on me.

Now (in the USA) it is common for babies to be born with cancer.
When, in all history, did that ever happen?
Not to mention huge increase worldwide of co-joined twins – formerly very rare… due to DNA damage worsening with each generation after rad exposure.
