Drip, Drip, Drip. . . Oak Ridge – Nuke Bomb Processing Accident

Nuke safety issue briefly halted uranium operation

OAK RIDGE — Casting operations with bomb-grade uranium were shut down for a brief period last month at the Y-12 nuclear weapons plant because of a safety issue near the area where uranium emissions are vented. . . .

” . . . The activity report for the week of Jan. 8 said nuclear criticality safety engineers at Y-12 documented a safety issue after production workers reported about 2 feet of water had been found in the “discharge tube” below Stack 110’s dust collector.

Generally speaking, water and U-235 don’t mix well because water can facilitate an unwanted nuclear chain reaction — known as a criticality accident — if sufficient amounts of fissionable uranium are present and other conditions are favorable.

Nothing to see here, move along!

There is NO NRC Event Report for 2016 on this event. Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board website.  Their REPORT

Nuclear survivor: Bill Clark recalls 1958 criticality accident and his up-and-down life since then

” . . . Clark remembers the flashes of blue light in the C-1 Wing of Building 9212, an area of the plant where scraps of bomb-grade uranium were chemically processed for recovery. At first he thought the light show was a welding arc. But he quickly realized nobody was welding, and workers were starting to run. Sirens were sounding, and there was an awful, awful smell.”

A question: MiningAwareness-I read your blog post of 3 Dec 2014 regarding Union Carbide being the owner of the Y-12 plant. I know Dow Chemical bought out Union Carbide. Does that mean that Dow now owns the Y-12 plant? You also stated in your blog that Dow makes resins for nuclear reactors. This is interesting and even more sinister for the political atmosphere in MI and the US if it’s true. Fred Upton is Chair of Energy and Commerce and the CEO of his family’s corporation, Whirlpool, sits on Dow’s Board. Does Dow now own the Y-12 plant?

Union Carbide is on the bodysnatchers’ doc –

After Bhopal, Union Carbide sold off their chemical div. to Pfizer to divy up the liability and screw victims.

FC, oh… I thought that was Dow. So, Dow and Pfizer bought out the Bhopal plant from Union Carbide? The company at Oak Ridge that was owned by Union Carbide-do you know who bought that it did the DOE take it over? It sounds like that may be what happened. I’ve been researching it and can’t seem to find the answer.

I will look it up … I remember Union Carbide dumped that division after the disaster.

Hi, Sorry for the late reply, I didn’t see this. Y-12 would be owned by DOE still, I think. I will see who the contractor is now. Dow and Dupont were merging recently. That is right about the resins. Dow seems to have sent trolls on my site before I shut down comments. They were funny trolls. The only good thing is that because the resins are money for them they do want to filter and do not want the 100 mSv exposure. Fred Upton has been bad for a long time. His name keeps cropping up.

“Comprised of Bechtel National, Inc; Lockheed Martin Services, Inc; ATK Launch Systems, Inc; and SOC, LLC, CNS will begin a four-month transition immediately. Additionally, CNS will use subcontractors Booz Allen Hamilton, Inc as Merger and Transformation specialist, and General Atomics for Savannah River Tritium Operations if that option is exercised by NNSA in the future.” from “NNSA Selects Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC to Manage the Consolidated Contract for Nuclear Production Operations” Press Release Jan 8, 2013 http://nnsa.energy.gov/mediaroom/pressreleases/contract010813

Also, EnergySolutions just got a subcontract at Y12. They are mostly run by former Goldman Sachs investment bankers. They are part of the failed Fukushima Cleanup and were allegedly involved in the WIPP disaster too, since they were at LANL. https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2015/01/05/when-investment-bankers-deal-in-nuclear-waste-for-investment-profit-we-need-to-be-very-scared/ Energy Solutions link broken on purpose. About their new subcontract:

Energy Solutions is also trying to buy WCS, Waste Control Specialists, in Texas if they are allowed through Antitrust because this gives them a monopoly or close to it.

“You said today that there is no NRC event report about what happened at oak ridge with the U-235. I also couldn’t find an event report about the massive tritium leak at Indian Point and questioned some folks about it. I’m going to forward you the emails. Paul Gunter of Beyond Nuclear responded. THEY ARENT REQUIRED TO!!!!!! Only if they want to!!! Can you even begin to imagine what’s happening on a daily basis regarding nuclear accidents all over the country and world and it doesn’t get reported??!! “

“Besides the fact that this tritium is leaking at such a horrible level, is the fact that there’s been no NRC Event Report filed. At least I haven’t found one. There must be rules governing when an Event Report is filed. It seems as if this would be one event to be reported. And would it meet their “emergency” status on the report? I would be inclined to think so… Lead in Flint, tritiated water in the Bronx…”

FC will soon have a post about this 😉

“…. NRC doesn’t have to report this at all… And it was a courtesy call…….. Upton [is] probably one of the folks at NRC who ruled they don’t have to report since I believe the Dept of Energy is the boss of NRC. There should be billboards posted all over NYC warning everybody….

Sent in also …..

The US NRC relies completely upon an industry voluntary self-reporting initiative also known as the Groundwater Protection Initiative (GPI) coordinated through the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) .

Under GPI protocol, Entergy provided the State of New York with a “courtesy call” and informed them of the tritium contamination in apparently two groundwater monitoring wells (MW-32 plus one other). NRC is handling this through the Region 1 Office of Public Affairs. “

wow! lots of broken effluent pipes between reactors and waterways due to age and subsidence/swell and shrink of soil.
