Fire & Explosions at Oconee Nuke Plant in S.C.

Move along, nothing to see here….

Transformer fire shuts unit of South Carolina nuclear power station

“A transformer at a nuclear power plant in South Carolina caught fire on Sunday, burning for about 30 minutes, but no nuclear material was in danger of being released, a local television station reported.”

CNN has a homey way of putting it – No public threat after fire at nuclear station in South Carolina, operator says
They left the explosions part out –
OCONEE COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA — (Scroll down for video) — Fires and explosions were reported at the Oconee Nuclear Station on Sunday. The blaze is now under control.

“Officials also said there is no public threat due to this incident. Officials say the fire broke out due to an equipment issue. They also found a down power line.” — they sort of noticed the power line, eh?

Oconee Nuke Plant – the family-friendly nuke plant enjoys South Carolina’s lax nuke plant fire regulations.

On Oconee: http://allthingsnuclear.org/dlochbaum/special-inspection-oconee-unplugged

The South Carolina governor (of Sikh origin) claims kin to Kris Singh, owner of Holtec, and was pushing for him to build nuclear reactors in South Carolina. He was a major campaign donor. When someone in the audience asked her if they would have to take back the nuclear waste, she said that nuclear waste had nothing to do with new reactors! Yet, she is suing the US government to remove the old waste from SC, since MOX stopped. Everyone wants the nuclear jobs but not the nuclear waste!

CNN appears pro-nuclear. (BBC is too, as a UK government agency.) Russian State RT never talks about the Russian State owned Nuclear giant Rosatom, to my knowledge.

CNN’s Ben Brumfield mindlessly quoted (or supposedly quoted) the UN: “According to United Nations nuclear experts, exposure to less than 1,000 mSv annually causes no meaningful increase in the risk of getting cancer.” http://edition.cnn.com/2013/02/28/world/asia/japan-who-radiation/ (I wonder if he mixed mrem and mSv – 100 mSv is 1 mSv). According to US gov BEIR report (2007) 1000 mSv (1 Sv) exposure leads to a 10% extra cancer risk (upper bound around 30%). 10% is a “meaningful increase”! Pro-nuke ICRP is only slightly under this, I think. A 2015 study suggests that the risk is 3 to 26 times worse than BEIR estimates- Per 100 people there would be 29 extra cancers per 1000 mSv (BEIR upper bound) to 262 or more per 1000 mSv, meaning that 100% would be at 400 mSv. The middle estimate is 152 extra cancers per 100 at 1000 mSv, meaning that 100% extra cancers kicks in at 700 mSv. Because of already high cancer rates, cancer for everyone kicks in much sooner. https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2015/12/19/another-look-at-the-recent-low-dose-radiation-exposure-study-inworks/ While Ben Brumfield wouldn’t have had access to the 2015 report, he would have had access to the BEIR report. His father used to be editor of the New Orleans Times Picayune. Mother was from Tennessee (I think) so maybe has Oak Ridge ties. He has claimed a background in biology and chemistry so should know that radiation is bad, or have the ability to read about it (unless that is why he left science for media). He has a perfect profile for CIA, having managed to get a job on German TV in the 1980s. Why the CIA would want to kill its own, however, remains a mystery to me. This isn’t the Texas software developer Ben Brumfield but the CNN Atlanta one.

I think that RF 18 is the 18th load of refuel.

I mean the 18th load of fuel or 18th refuel. It dates from ca 1985 and so that would be approximately right.

NY Times – ‘Unusual Event’ at Oconee Nuclear Plant in South Carolina Leads to Shutdown
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/08/us/nuclear-power-plant-in-south-carolina-partially-shut-after-fire.html

WLTX – “Officials with Duke Energy said in a news release that the fire was upgraded from an unusual event to alert because the blaze damaged a power line in the station’s switchyard. They say an alert must be declared when a fire causes loss of electrical equipment.
The North Carolina-based utility says an alert is the second in increasing significance of four nuclear emergency classifications.”
