Reuters –  FEMA chief Brock Long omitted from wreck

WASHINGTON/HICKORY, N.C. (Reuters) – The chief of the U.S. disaster response agency FEMA was riding in a government vehicle last year when it was involved in a collision, but his name was excluded from an official report on the crash, according to people familiar with the matter.

The omission of the name of the Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator, Brock Long, was examined by the internal watchdog at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees FEMA, as part of a wider probe of Long’s travel habits.

According to sources, the probe examined Long’s use of government vehicles without authorization, including large SUVs, to commute for months on the weekends between Washington, D.C., and his family home in Hickory, North Carolina, at a cost to the government of about $151,000. . . . (more)

“The report also lays out evidence in which Long and his family were transported in government cars without authorization, including during a trip to Hawaii that was not for official business.

Here in Escondido (San Diego county), Marie Waldron represents District 75 as the elected Assemblymember to represent a very large district in north SD county.

Since Marie Waldron was elected over a decade ago, she routine drives her large personal vehicle SUV to from Sacramento every week, and her travel expense are probably in excess of other Assembly colleagues from other southern California districts that choose to fly instead.

While that is her personal preference, her choices are excessively expensive, since Waldron’s travel expenses probably exceed those of other elected Assembly members in other southern California Districts who also represent large geographical districts in southern CA , wiith high populations.

Personally, I would pre fer having an elected Assemblymember represent voters in District 75 who want to spend MORE time in Sacramento, working for us, than someone who spends more time on the road than is necessary, and gets reimbursed at excessive rate, at taxpayer expense, In Escondido, many unmarried seniors like me. who still struggle every month to make monthly bill payments, and sacrifice far more than Waldron ever will.

As a public stakeholder in Escondido who is accutely aware of a frugal lifestyle, and economic hardships, it is grossly unfair when elected official Waldron’s travel expenses are never on her own dime. Personally, I believe an audit is in order, and I request a formal report be posted online to disclose public costs to taxpayers, since she was elected.

I think you will get a response if you tell the GAO.

Looking things up on .gov websites it looks to me like these big angencies like FEMA spend a ton of their budget on a flurry of expensive websites, computer data sets and huge, frequent “drills”. Then comes a crisis they are real penny pinchers when it comes to handing out help money to communities or people in distress.
Meanwhile their IT dept. is eating out at a fancy restaurant!

Brock Long on Hurricane Michael – of course no ideas on what to do about nuke plants in hurricane path –

… and NO help for evacuating people with no car (over 50% of the pop. in many panhandle towns and trailer parks). NO place to tell people to go for safe shelter…. like everyone in a mobile home 3 feet shorter than the storm surge on the way.

All this guy did was fire off some cell phone warnings.

This FEMA agency is just as bad as when Katrina hit (opinion) – FC
