URGENT: Fukushima – Melted Nuclear Fuel Corium About to Burst Containment (+updates)

2 12 2011

from Radioactive Chat

Melted Nuclear Fuel Corium Soon Outside Containment at Fukushima Reactor Units

New reports coming out saying that all of the nuclear fuel at reactor unit 1 have melted and broken the bottom of the steel pressure vessel inside the reactor. The corium (melted nuclear fuel) is now on the bottom of the concrete below and is eating it’s way down further and soon it will reach the containment vessel steel that is the last defence before completely outside.

Reports say that not only is this happening in reactor unit 1 but also in Unit’s 2 and 3. In the light of this it has again shown the seriousness of the Fukushima Disaster. . .  ( more + graphics)

Fukushima Radiation Risks ‘Severely Underestimated’ –

Greenpeace says ” . . .   simulation maps of potential accidents at Japan’s nuclear plants – used in the development of nuclear emergency response efforts – “are completely inadequate, and have not been updated since the Fukushima disaster.”

On this story –  Nuclear Experts: “We have to be prepared for the worst case scenario”

 starspire says:

I don’t know anything about this nuclear situation, but it seems to me that, if Mr. Gunderson’s modeling is correct, that a huge explosion occuring when the fuel hits the water table would do the following:

1) Expel a quantity of radioactivity that could substantially reduce life in the Northern Hemisphere

2) Poison the entire acquifer in Japan and so the Country would be uninhabitable, crashing the third largest economy

3) Creat a giant radioactive Tsunami that could hit the West Coast of the US and Mexico.

Maybe I am wrong. There are no scenarios posted anywhere that I am able to find online. Are there any websites that post worse-case scenarios? The Russians built a barrier, and all of the guys became really sick or died. This is probably why no one wants to build a barrier in Fukushima.

Covert War Against Enviro-Activists

Why are Eco and Animal Activists the Top Domestic Terrorism Threat?

by Will Potter

. . . . If you listen to the talking points of corporations, industry groups, and politicians, it is because of the property destruction of underground groups like the Animal Liberation Front and Earth Liberation Front. These groups have engaged in serious crimes that have cost corporations millions of dollars in damages and lost profits. Law enforcement has noted that these movements have not harmed a single human being, but they warn about the potential for future violence.

As I became immersed in this issue, though, I came to realize that the perceived threat of these movements is much bigger than burned SUVs, animals released from fur farms, or even the specter of future violence.

The terrorism rhetoric has expanded far beyond the militant fringes of these movements. Mainstream, nonviolent groups like Greenpeace, Peta, and the Humane Society have all been labeled “terrorists” by corporate PR campaigns and investigated as “terrorists” by the FBI. And new legislation being considered in Iowa and Minnesota doesn’t target underground groups, it criminalizes undercover investigators who document animal cruelty.

The common thread between such disparate groups is not the tactics they use; it is that they all, in their own ways, have effectively targeted corporate profits and created cultural change. As a bulletin to law enforcement by the Department of Homeland Security warned: “Attacks against corporations by animal rights extremists and eco-terrorists are costly to the targeted company and, over time, can undermine confidence in the economy.” . . .

Fukushima, Japan NEWS for May 14 & 15, 2011

14 05 2011

UPDATE:     March 15

Units 2 & 3 leaking, core damaged (!!!)

Substantial damage to 2 more Fukushima reactors

. . . . The pressure vessel, a cylindrical steel container that holds nuclear fuel, “is likely to be damaged and leaking water at Units Nos. 2-3,” said (lying sack of sh*t) Junichi Matsumoto, Tepco spokesman on nuclear issues, in a news briefing Sunday. . .

Breach of vessel containing fuel rods increases likelihood that rods have been exposed and radioactive water has leaked

Witness Says Nuclear Crisis at Fukushima Plant Partially Man-made

The plant was built to only withstand waves of up to 5.7 meters high, so most of the buildings were left underwater. This resulted in a loss of power, which caused the plant’s cooling systems to fail and raised the risk that the fuel rods would overheat and melt. But when mobile electricity supplies arrived at the site that evening, workers came to face another major problem. They did not have the cables to connect the power supply to the nuclear reactor. . .

Japan warned against flooding N-plant

Experts say flooding a reactor whose pressure vessel has been leaked might cause a potentially dangerous radiation leak in the plant

In the No.1 reactor, uranium fuel rods partially melted after they were fully exposed during the 11 March quake and tsunami, and keeping the leaked fuel cool is going to be very difficult, the facility’s operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) said.

Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said it believed partially melted fuel had fallen to the bottom of the pressure vessel, which holds the reactor core together, and may have leaked into its concrete base, known as the dry well.

Greenpeace has urged TEPCO to abandon plans to flood the container with water, given the likelihood that melted fuel has damaged it. . .

Fukushima Engineer Says He Helped Cover Up Flaw at Dai-Ichi Reactor No. 4

[Mar. 22]   One of the reactors in the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant may have been relying on flawed steel to
hold the radiation in its core, according to an engineer who helped build its containment vessel four decades ago.
Mitsuhiko Tanaka says he helped conceal a manufacturing defect in the $250 million steel vessel installed at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi No. 4 reactor while working for a unit of Hitachi Ltd.  in 1974. The reactor, which Tanaka has called a “time bomb,” . . .
