Nebraska Nuke Plants Flooded – UPDATE

2 08 2011

Media Blackout on Nuclear Incident at Fort Calhoun in Nebraska

. . . . In addition to the flooding that has occured on the banks of the Missouri River at Fort Calhoun, the Cooper Nuclear Facility in Brownville, Nebraska may also be threatened by the rising flood waters. As was declared at Fort Calhoun on June 7th, another “Notification of Unusual Event” was declared at Cooper Nuclear Station on June 20th. This notification was issued because the Missouri River’s water level reached an alarming 42.5 feet. Apparently, Cooper Station is advising that it is unable to discharge sludge into the Missouri River due to flooding, and therefore “overtopped” its sludge pond. . . .   (more + video)

Nuclear Stress Tests Have Japan’s Energy Sector Bewildered

In a surprise move, the Japanese government announced last Wednesday it would conduct safety assessments–dubbed stress tests–on all of the country’s nuclear reactors. The unexpected decision caused widespread confusion, and even consternation among some cabinet members, given that the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) had been reassuring certain prefectural and local governments that it was safe to restart their nuclear reactors.

The situation was hardly improved when on Monday the government announced that the safety assessment would use new standards and be carried out in two stages involving two entities, METI’s Nuclear and Industry Safety Commission (NISA) and the independent Nuclear Safety Commission. . . (more)

UPDATE,  June 11

From the  Omaha World- Herald

New flood wall: The Omaha Public Power District has installed a new barrier around its Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station and is now pumping out floodwaters from the Missouri River. OPPD installed the new 8-foot-tall, water-filled barrier around the plant to replace a similar one that failed two weeks ago after a worker inadvertently punctured it with a loader. The utility planned to pump out the water behind the new barrier on Sunday to create a dry area around the plant, so it will be easier for workers to get around. Both OPPD and federal regulators have said Fort Calhoun is safe even without this barrier. Officials say all the key areas of the plant have stayed dry inside. The plant will remain shut down until after floodwaters subside in the fall.

Everything’s OK. No flooding at all on the plant. They just need an 8 foot balloon to keep out the carp!

Fort Calhoun Nuke Plant Latest: The Missouri River is now expected to rise 2 feet higher at Blair, Neb., than experts predicted previously

9 07 2011

From the Omaha World Herald today –  (Blair is home of the flooded Ft. Calhoun nuclear plant) – – –

Blair update: The Missouri River is now expected to rise 2 feet higher at Blair, Neb., than experts predicted previously. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says it revised its prediction for the river near Blair because of new information it received about how fast the water is moving at that point. The Corps now says the river will rise to between 32 and 34 feet next week after releases from Gavins Point Dam increase to 150,000 cubic feet per second. The river at Blair was already at 30.16 feet Friday. That’s well above the flood stage of 26.5 feet. The Corps says the gauge at Blair doesn’t collect data on the flow rate, so a team was sent out to collect that. This adjustment doesn’t affect other locations on the river.

Levee breached again: A third partial breach of a levee south of Hamburg, Iowa, has been plugged. Mike Crecelius, emergency management director for Fremont County, said the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers spotted the breach Thursday morning.

Fukushima Spews, Los Alamos Burns, Vermont Rages and We’ve Almost Lost Nebraska

5 07 2011

from Huffington Post

By Harvey Wasserman

Humankind is now threatened by the simultaneous implosion, explosion, incineration, courtroom contempt and drowning of its most lethal industry.

We know only two things for certain: worse is yet to come, and those in charge are lying about it — at least to the extent of what they actually know, which is nowhere near enough.

Indeed, the assurances from the nuke power industry continue to flow like the floodwaters now swamping the Missouri Valley heartland. . .  (more)
