Sierra snowpack jumps from 19 to 98 percent in just 7 days, U.S.
“Snowpack over the Sierra has increased dramatically in just 7 days after a series of storms affected the region last week. The sudden change gives California its wettest start to the Water Year (October 1 – September 30) in more than 40 years. A new series of Pacific storms will bring periods of heavy low elevation rain and mountain snow to much of the western U.S. through the Christmas weekend. Isolated urban and small stream flooding impacts will be possible along the immediate West Coast and into portions of the Central Valley in California this week.” . . . (more)

Lake level at Lake Oroville has been steadily increasing by over a foot per day for the past week or two. At this pace the Lake level will be over 800 by the end of May. This will put us on a June-July lake level watch. We will be coming into the snowmelt months pretty soon. I have been watching the lake level every couple weeks for months. I have screenshots from the past months. The Sierra Nevada’s have record snow pack.
This article is from the beginning of January. I’ve heard that additional snowfall after January hasn’t been as robust as in the beginning of Winter.

Lake Oroville has gained a lot of water last week and this week. The water level is 100 feet above the infamous 2019 level at present. If the water keeps rising at a similar pace to the end of 2022 to the beginning of 2023, then Lake Oroville water level will be flirting with the maximum 900 feet by the end of February.

TheEarthMaster says that the northern Sacramento River is expected to reach flood stage Monday or Tuesday, 9th or 10th of January. He lives in Chico, California and will send video Monday or Tuesday. This will be an indicator of flood waters of the nearby Oroville dam. The Oroville dam CAM’s are not functioning.

Here is some information on the Hamilton City CA flood gage, which is near Chico CA and TheEarthMaster. You can see that flood stage has almost been topped. Lake Oroville which is to the southeast of Chico is rising at approximately 3-5 feet per day.

“I don’t know if the gates have been repaired. The simple harmonic motion problem of the Main Spillway cannot be be rectified unless the Main Spillway is lengthened or shortened to offset the return wave. So DNR can’t send a lot of water down the Main Spillway without generating too much simple harmonic motion. Just like ” galloping Gurdie” on You’*Tube. Due to the lake levels rapid increase DNR will have get rid of the excess water one way or the other. A little water flowing down the Main Spillway and some overflow down the Emergency Spillway might help with the water release. There’s still a few more days of the Pineapple Express and then the problem turns to the record snowmelt. The problem with too much water released from the Oroville Dam is that the Sacramento Valley is already flooded.”

This is the snowpack that will melt and add to Lake Oroville. Lake Oroville is at a lake level of 787 feet tonight. The lake level should be around 800 feet Wednesday night. The Oroville Dam is 900 feet tall. By next week or the week after the dam will be in or near emergency territory, if the lake keeps filling at current amounts.

Might be a 2 CFS leak all day. What kind of leak will be seen when the water rises high enough to be held back by the faulty gates. Part or all of the 2 CFS could also be slipping out the tunnels below the dam.

The GFS prediction is 3.5″ for the Oroville area in the next 5 days.
I think you said that since the Lake Oroville water shed is so large, 5 times the amount of rainfall will be added to the Oroville lake level. 5 X 16″=80″ That puts the lake level above full pool, if that much rain falls.

It was really raining hard yesterday and the water was wetting the Main Spillway. I could see the rain in the CAM’s. Now there’s always a little water slipping through the Main Spillway gates.

Temperatures will warm a little to allow some of the mountain precipitation to fall on the record snow pack as rain. This will cause melting and add to the rainfall.

This article is 1 month old but the same problems to look out for and the science apply to the coming week(s) snowmelt. Today will be the first day of the Sierra Nevada snowmelt. Truckee and Bridgeport temperatures are 30° and 42° respectively at 10:30 Sunday morning. Sixties are predicted for both Sierra Nevada cities today.

The reason I am not paying strict attention this week is Blancolirio videos show how well they know the flood history of the area and the farmland they have reserved for overflow.
And … I don’t see him and other locals putting warning videos up about this or that weak spot in the dam. And the water chute has much easier access to it (all those side roads) to look at it.

“This morning reservoir elevation is at 871.8 feet. I don’t understand how DWR can let the reservoir get so high when the Sierra Nevadas have a record snowpack. I’ve checked future temperature forecasts that show daytime high temperatures in the 50’s, and 60’s. The Sierras are surely going to see more rain. The snowpack will get so waterlogged one day that the snowmelt will trigger a deluge of water that will overwhelm the remaining elevation of Lake Oroville. DWR is playing with the lives of millions. The reservoir elevation has to be decreased!”
