Defense Dept. Officials on Chinese Surveillance Balloon
Members on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense expressed anger and frustration during a briefing with Defense Department officials on a Chinese spy balloon that entered U.S. airspace in late January 2023. Several senators asked why the balloon wasn’t shot down earlier upon entering U.S. airspace over Alaska. Officials defended the decision to shoot it down off the coast of South Carolina, citing public safety and their ability to recover the debris.
