She said that when the hotbox triggered the alarm the engine near the rear of the train began to apply breaks. She never said that the 2 engines at the front of the train also began to break. If they didn’t start to slow, the line of train cars would been pulled tight by the breaking of the rear engine. Thus pulling some rail cars off the track. This would have been enhanced if the train was going around a curve.
