A Vancouver woman wants Canadian governments held more accountable for protecting public health in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear crisis. In an August 8 interview at the Georgia Straight office, Isabel Budke pointed out that citizens and nongovernmental organizations can exert a great deal more pressure on Health Canada and other regulators to improve monitoring, measuring, and reporting on radiation levels in water, soil, and food. . . .
. . . . Last week, the Straight reported that on March 20, a Health Canada monitoring station in Sidney, B.C., detected iodine-131 at more than 300 times the background level. Despite this, Health Canada spokesperson Stéphane Shank told the Straight on August 9 from Ottawa that air-monitoring stations have shown that radiation levels are “minute” and pose “no risk” to Canadians. . . Please don’t repost this panic-media dreck.
Given that Iodine-131’s normal background level is so low as to be undetectable most days, three hundred times the level is still so minute as to – as Health Canada points out – be harmless.
Moreover, the report on iodine levels was five months ago, and iodine-131 has a half-life of ~8 days. So, logically, the current levels are 300 * (1/2)^18 = 0.001 times the background level. (Or, effectively, the background level, since something must replenish the background supply.)

It is important to recall Canada’s biggest product is uranium.
The standards for safety (on radiation) is completely out of line with all international standards.
If you wish to refute, reply and I’ll post it for the interests of fairness. Add links if you wish..
This blog is definately anti-nuke in tone.

****Anti-nuclear supports, the only way to stop this insane industry is by buying from the none nuclear countries when possible. For now I will not support Japan until I believe they are stopping nuclear power. This maybe the only voice we have as the nuclear industry controls the government’s actions in all countries.

I believe the government of Canada should test for radiation in Canada and send the bill for this to Japan for causing it.
