Thank you Julian, for even in the face of (known) danger, you have stood tall and ignited a force far greater than any government…you have stirred the slumbering masses.
The day John Lennon died, I stood across the street, I heard the shots ring out, I saw his body drop. I knew that the world would never be the same…the light had dimmed. On this, the anniversary of his death, once again I see those in power – a power we the people gave unreservedly – persecuting one man, even calling for his death.
Why?
Fear.
Fear of truth and transparency, of losing power over the masses. Fear of the one thing governments seek to control…the one thing they rely on to capture our votes and stay in power…the right to freedom of speech.
It has been said that we live in interesting times. You have made it even more interesting Julian…you have provoked thought and dialogue among combatants, and even now, you are changing the way people think.
You have opened the eyes of millions of people, and even those that may not fully approve of your methods, are calling on the Australian Government to support your rights as a citizen.
I believe that if Julia Gillard does not uphold the rights every Australian believes to be undeniable…the people of this country will come to the conclusion that their Government has no respect for the law or the people.
The government and companies that have sought to restrict access to Wikileaks may regret having done so as the tide of public opinion reaches an inevitable conclusion…that we have been lied to by the very people we elected to protect us, our rights and the rights of future generations.
I fully support the Open letter to Julia Gillard, and thank Jeff Sparrow and Elizabeth O’Shea for their clear and concise statement.
